Cycling BC presents the 2011 Development Track Camp at the Commonwealth Legacy Velodrome.

Cycling BC is currently running a Junior Development Track Cycling camp on the Commonwealth Legacy Velodrome, hosted by the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association. The goal of the camp is to teach youth and junior riders an array of track cycling skills, which they can use towards reaching their future cycling goals.

The camp includes 14 youth and juniors riders from the Greater Victoria area and Comox, BC.  A few elite riders from Vancouver and Victoria are also taking advantage of the camp, fresh off of racing at the Canadian Track Nationals only a couple weeks ago. Leading the Camp is renowned track cycling coach, Jeremy Storie, along with sidekick and apprentice, National Team track cyclist, Tim Sherstobitoff.

Day 1 started off with a full overview and instructions on track riding, etiquette, and basic skills. While the majority of juniors have completed a learn to ride clinic at the Burnaby Velodrome at the beginning of the year, a refresher course helped remind the riders of a few key points. As 14-year old Gillian Ellsay puts it, “the most important thing when riding the track is not to stop pedaling!”
After a solid warm up, the group started off with a flying 200m effort, and based on their time they we put into appropriate groups for flying 1-3 lap efforts. The focus for this exercise was to work on riding close to each other’s wheels, staying relaxed, planning ahead, communication, and quick rider exchanges. By the end of the day, they were all starting to look like seasoned veterans!

Tomorrow, the riders will have an easier morning session, focusing more on skills. However, in the evening, everyone will take part in the fast and furious local Friday Night Racing put on the by the GVVA. The camp will conclude after two more track sessions over the weekend.

A huge thanks goes out to Cycling BC, the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association, and all the sponsors and supporters that were able to revive and reopen the Commonwealth Legacy Track and who support track cycling in British Columbia and Canada.

NIC Criterium

Hi All
The North Island College Criterium went off without a problem today as a great weather and volunteers showed up to help test the new course.
After lots of practise laps and sprints, and discussion, the course was reversed and modified to make the course safer due to sunlight concerns, and an angled corner.
Riders attending this free event were Mark and James Grant (who earlier in the day won the Junior TTT in Nanaimo), Steve Grant, Nigel Hutcheson, Ray Wagner, and Jeff Matell.
After all the practice laps Nigel, Ray, and Jeff decided they had LOTS of energy to race a 10minutes plus 3 laps criterium. After numerous attacks, counter-attacks, and getting tired, Jeff Matell took top honors as Ray and Nigel duked it out for 2nd and 3rd.
A BIG thanks to Ray, John Bernard, Hilary, and Trevor, and all the riders for helping to setup/takedown the event and all the feedback needed for this course to possibly be used in the 2012 race season!

Comox Cup #2 Tsolum River Road Race

Under clear, blue skies and rising temperatures, the Comox Valley Cycle Club's 2nd race of the Comox Cup Series, the Mike Fisher Realty Tsolum River Road Race, kicked off with 28 riders on the line.  A  total of four categories lined up with the A’s racing 83km, B’s 62.2km, C’s 41.5km, and Novice 20.8km.
At the start line, the category C’s and the Novice started out together with 10 year old Isaac Van der Vliet, in Novice, kicking off on the same roads his father, brother, and sister had raced on at his age. After taking the win and easily staying with the C group, young Isaac got to watch as his sister, brother, and father finished their races.
In the C category, 5 riders lined up for a very fast race with Trail Bikes-Eatmore Sprouts (TBES) Cycling Team rider Mark Grant taking the “prime” prize midway through the race before winning the sprint over Ernie Klassen and Kia Van der Vliet.
In the B category, 7 riders lined up for 6 laps around the tough course. Right after the start line, the race experienced its first surprise of the day, when Trevor Pritoula’s rear tire blew out. In the mid-race “prime”, Rob Stables jumped away to take the prize. At the end of the race, Team TBES rider James Grant sprinted to the win over Hugh Park and Rob Stabler.
In the A category race, 16 riders lined up for 8 laps in what was to be a race of attrition as the temperatures heated up. In the wake of two small crashes on lap two, Team TBES rider Nigel Ellsay took off on a solo flier. The pace of the pack instantly lifted and quickly narrowed down to a 6 man chase group comprised of TBES riders Doug Merrick and Andrew Grant, CVCC riders Jeff Matell, John Van der Vliet, and Ray Wagner, and Oak Bay Bikes rider Warren Muir. Andrew was later dropped from the group just before it caught Nigel.  On lap 5, Ray Wagner sprinted successfully to win the “prime”.  After numerous attacks from Team TBES, all the riders felt the strain of the 83km road race in the heat with TBES rider Nigel Ellsay taking the sprint win over Warren Muir and Jeff Matell.
Prizes and mid-race primes were provided by Blacks Cycle, Trail Bicycles and Nestle Canada, with post-race snacks and icecream from Quality Foods and Nestle Canada.  A BIG thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible, and to Mike Fisher for his generous sponsorship.

2011 Comox Cup Race Bible

Hi Everyone
Sorry for the late posting but here is the 2011 comox cup race bible!
The first two races are definites (Dove Creek and Tsolum), the Omnium has yet to be decided due to no race directors stepping forward. You can be race director for one of the three events, you do not have to do all three! and the full mt washington HC in August is still being determined (scheduling conflicts with master races, and the Victoria Cycling League).
And some time later I will upload the 2011 Comox Cup point series to allow everyone to track their points that they accumulate.
If you find any mistakes in the Comox Cup Race Bible, send me an email. and I will clarify and correct the mistake. or just act confused.
See you out on the road.

Western Canada Games and 4th Weekend of the Spring Series

In the latest spring series race weekend the Grants, Van der Vliets, Ellsays, Merrick, and Duncans went over and raced on the challenging Atomic road race course, 272nd Course, or the Western Canada games spring camp.
In the Western Canada Games spring camp junior riders Jordan Duncan, Andrew Grant, Jake Van der Vliet, Kia Van der Vliet, and Gillian Ellsay participated the two day camp that included a hill climb, time trial, and track time on the Burnaby Velodrome.
In the novice 272nd road race Kia Van der Vliet began her 2011 season by working together with another older rider too finish midpack after reeling rider after rider.
In the U17 272nd road race James and Mark Grant attacked from the get go and took 1st and 3rd after 5 laps on the course.
The Saturday “C” Atomic road race Jake Van der Vliet, and Andrew and Steve Grant lined up on the challenging Atomic road race that featured tough climbs, narrow roads, and wickedly fast descents. Steve, Jake, and Andrew were all dropped after numerous surges strung out the field.
In the “B” atomic road race John Van der Vliet, Nigel Ellsay, Doug Merrick, and Jordan Duncan lined up on the challenging course. Just as in the “C” race the challenging course took its toll as John, then Nigel, then Doug were dropped during the race. Jordan Duncan took a top 10 in the sprint finished that featured a fast descent coming into a narrow, winding finish.
Sundays 272nd course had riders racing around the hilly Aldergrove Lake Regional Park on a 7km circuit that had rough roads, winding climbs, numerous potholes, and some fast corners that help decide the race.
In the “C” 272nd road race rider Andrew and Steve Grant, and Jake Van der Vliet lined up under sunny weather to contest the 63km race. Steve was dropped earlier on as surges, and potholes stretched out the field. In the finishing sprint Andrew came in for a top ten finish while Jake, after riding his wheel as it flatted, took a top 15 finish.
In the B finish Doug Merrick and Nigel Ellsay (Trail Eatmore Sprouts Cycling Team) lined up for the 105km road race that featured numerous pinch flats from the potholes, and careful positioning in certain narrow sections to come out on top. Just over half-way through the race Doug dropped out after the surges deadened his legs. Nigel Ellsay overcame some early knee pains, and the tough pace to come out on top in the sprint finish as he took his second road race win of the season that has only seen him on the podium four times of the five races he has started.
